This painting hangs in a restaurant in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.  I am hoping to make it up there this summer to see it hanging and to enjoy a wonderful meal.  Keeping up with my paintings is hard because there have been so many...but in the past three or four years I have painted less and enjoyed it more. Doing a larger paintings and connecting with the new owners and making the experience special is what makes it so very special.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.  Ephesians 6:18

By the Dawn's Early Light, Contemporary Horse Painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

The painting was in my mind a few weeks ago and looking through my painting archives I came across a single horse with a sun rising entitled Dawn's Early Light.  I thought it would be appropriate to do a contemporary horse painting for the 4th of July and name it By Dawn's Early Light.

Today is Independence Day in the United States. This is a holiday we all look forward from the time we are little bitty until we are old and in our rocking chairs.  In the old days when I was young....we had sparklers, small firecrackers and simple things to light off with our families.  I loved the holiday at my grandmother's farm. It was always darker in the country and the fireworks seem brighter.

When I had children, two of the three were boys that played baseball so we were always at the baseball field for Little League fireworks in Nacogdoches. Most of the community was there and all of our friends.

When I moved to Kentucky, we went to the fireworks in Cincinnati on the river. We sat high on the banks and literally laid on a blanket looking up watching the beautiful lights over the river with a power reflection from the water.

Freedom is a powerful thing. But more powerful is God.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Ephesians 6:10-17

A bit more color today as I prepare my thoughts for the Fourth of July... an American celebration surrounding the birth of our nation with Independence Day.

Terry has my  dad's flags ready to line the sidewalks. I am so proud to carry on his tradition in our neighborhood. We have always put out our big flag, but this will be our first year to use Dad's flags. Lady L will be over later to help her Bampa put out the flags for tomorrow.

For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth. Ephesians 5:9

Choices.  Are they good or bad?  Change. Is it good or bad?

Change is inevitable. Choice is inevitable.  Weighing pros and cons to make choices is one avenue to making a decision and the second way is to make a decision with your heart.  I find myself bouncing between the choice of lists and using my heart.  I have to say most of the time my heart leads with the Spirit of God guiding me.  I believe my core values are instilled in me through all my life experiences and those affect my heart decisions as well.

This horse painting is small but packed through with heart choices on both color and approach to the canvas. My addiction is color but in painting for me that is a positive.

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.  Ephesians 5: 1-2

Summer heat is cranking up and we wake just before dawn about 5:30 to begin our watering routine.  The garden is watered every morning and sometimes around dusk depending on the heat of the day.  The Strawberries are delicious..the carrots are sweet, the green beans are more than we can eat... Terry planted them every other week, so we should have those for months ahead.  I even have one lettuce that made the heat, and with it tomatoes, bell peppers, squash and zucchini.

Changes for the fall will be higher beds to grow in but other than that we are having fun eating from the garden.

I have spoken with several other artists out there that are battling change with me. Our studios have moved and changed and we are struggling to get back into the 'grove' of feeling comfortable painting in the new area.  For me it is all the daily chores and responsibilities that seem to come first and I have to adjust my priorities. GOD has to be first and then closer to the top of the list will be my art.

We use to sail in the summer. We have not in a few years. I miss the gentle lull on the water and the moments of adrenalin rush when the wind picks up and the sails fill and the boat skims across the top of the water. While we have some control, most of it is the wind, God's breath upon us.  We have to navigate the waters with the winds provided and many times we are caught in the 'still' of no wind on a solid surface of water...just waiting, waiting for the change and the wind to pick up.

Perhaps not having the studio 'right' is being in the still water... I should be resting and centering on God right now and know in my heart that the wind will fill my sails soon.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8
