Summer Grazing! Contemporary Horse Paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

© G.O.D. Laurie Justus Pace      Graphics One Design 2014

Posting again!  It will be slow getting started here but I was so excited to find my sign in to use this blog again!  We have a lot to catch up on.

Grazing 2 had a similar flavor to Grazing which was painted in 2014. This one was painted last fall in 2020. I really do not like to imitate other paintings I have done. The actual journey creating a painting is individual to each canvas.  If not you get caught up in trying to force things to work.  That is why I call it 'The Spirit of the Paint.'

My news is a thought to return to teaching and doing it for free or for a low cost to people that want to revisit the basics and push to find their journey.  Watching other artists find their path in creativity is one of the greatest joys!  If you think you might want to do this, click through to my CONTACT PAGE and send me a note. Let me know what you are wanting to learn or where you are in your art journey.  We really will start with basics things but everyone works at their level.  Just in the beginning of thought on this one.  Helps to know if people are interested in it before I put all the planning and recording into it.

Have a fabulous weekend!  Laurie

Been There... Completed Contemporary Horse Painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

 Size:30 x 40  Oil on Canvas.

It is finished... I can say I have been there officially.  The composition of this painting literally grew from the story that I felt in my body of the daily movement of the world and the sun and moon.  Inside that is the movement of each of us... routinely doing the same thing over and over again.  You have been there I am sure!

This contemporary horse painting uniquely captures that moment that you realize it is time to do new things and bring new moments into your lives.

I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

Progress on Been There, Contemporary Horse Paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

Progress Been There
©+Laurie Pace       Graphics One Design 2014

 Size:30 x 40  Oil on Canvas.

The patterns have begun to establish themselves on the surface. The strength in the horses neck is evident by the color choice. I am an artist that goes after 'contemporary horse paintings' with brilliant colors.

I had hoped to finish to post but taking this composition slowly as it develops and not rushing the energy. I want the painting to evolve naturally.  You can see the rough music through the layers of oil paints as I progress into the next layers of paint. Still caught up in the 'been there' as I think more of the sun and moon and the daily journey and how our lives are totally situated around this natural happening of day into night repeated to what seems infinite or until the sun bursts and flares out leaving the earth cold and dead.

What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
Generations come and generations go,
    but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
The wind blows to the south
    and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,

    ever returning on its course.
Ecclesiastes 1:3-6

Been There, Contemporary Horse Paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

Been There    ©Laurie Pace 2014

Progress Painting Been There

 Size: 30 x 40  Oil on Canvas.

I am constantly looking for neat things to mount as the foundation of my contemporary horse paintings. I came across a CW book of older music and chose the Clint Black song "Been There".   I shredded it and glazed it onto the canvas.

"did you ever wake up in the middle of the night"
"did you ever wake up in the middle of the day"
"did you ever wake up in the middle of a dream"

Those were the lines that struck me as I worked... and as you can see there are spheres in the painting... When you think of how "rote" our days have become... Work, Drink, Eat and Sleep... and do it again the next day. Both Parents working, children in day care.... everyone forgetting how to live... how to be alive.  We have all BEEN THERE.

So the painting has a strong horse prancing with the sun and moon revolving... like they have 'been there' forever each day.
Watch for the finished painting tomorrow.

The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130 NIV

Horse 56 Ode to Joy Contemporary Horse Paintings by Laurie Pace

Horse 56 Ode to Joy by Laurie Pace

 Size:8 x 10  Oil on Canvas.

This painting is thick.  It is really thick. I have some additional close up images on the main website if you want to see them. I loved the way the colors blended throughout the background and in the center of the horse. His head is tilted up to feel the sun on his face in the early morning cool breeze. The grass is wet and covered in dew and the day has just begun.

Do you stretch in bed and feel this way sometimes? Eager to get up and start your day?  That is one wonderful thing about life, we are not 'stuck' to a time clock, but we still stay responsible to what needs to be accomplished in our lives. What brings your joy to the surface? Mine is the early morning sunrise.

He is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings grass from the earth. 2 Samuel 23:4

Night Appaloosa  By Laurie Pace
 Size:8 x 10  Mixed Media on Canvas.

I went back and forth on this Appaloosa Painting.  It is really much prettier in hand than in the image. Stop by my website by clicking the link above to see some close up shots of this painting. This is the second of two more realistic paintings I did this week.  The Appaloosa is definitely one of my favorite horses to paint.

Size: 9 x 12  Mixed Media on Canvas Board

Always fun to do mixed media pieces. This has in the background pages from a western novel. Over that are rubbed layers of glazing and then acrylic on the top surface. I only do a few of these with a touch of realism to offer something other than abstract.  Maybe these horses will be more collectible because they are rare for me...who knows.  If it calls to your heart, visit the site on the link above to see if it is still available. We finally hit the 100 degrees last week and there is no escape. Then we had rain and 65 degrees.  This week it is back up in the high 90's again.  This is what prompted this painting...the summer heat. There is only vivid bright shades of blue sky, red eyelids when you close your eyes to the brilliant yellow sun... and a tiny bit of green grass in the shade. Couldn't have captured it any better in this contemporary horse painting.

And I saw something else under the sun:
In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.
Ecclesiastes 3:16

Crowning the Hill, contemporary horse painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

Crowning the Hill  48 x 48   © Laurie Pace 2014

Crowning the Hill
Contemporary Horse Paintings

Size: 48 x 48  Oil on Canvas. Sold

Available Paintings by Laurie Pace

This painting hangs in a restaurant in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.  I am hoping to make it up there this summer to see it hanging and to enjoy a wonderful meal.  Keeping up with my paintings is hard because there have been so many...but in the past three or four years I have painted less and enjoyed it more. Doing a larger paintings and connecting with the new owners and making the experience special is what makes it so very special.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.  Ephesians 6:18

By the Dawn's Early Light, Contemporary Horse Painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

The Dawn's Early Light  © Laurie Pace

By The Dawn's Early Light
©+Laurie Pace       Graphics One Design 2014

 Size: 30 x 40  Oil on Canvas.

The painting was in my mind a few weeks ago and looking through my painting archives I came across a single horse with a sun rising entitled Dawn's Early Light.  I thought it would be appropriate to do a contemporary horse painting for the 4th of July and name it By Dawn's Early Light.

Today is Independence Day in the United States. This is a holiday we all look forward from the time we are little bitty until we are old and in our rocking chairs.  In the old days when I was young....we had sparklers, small firecrackers and simple things to light off with our families.  I loved the holiday at my grandmother's farm. It was always darker in the country and the fireworks seem brighter.

When I had children, two of the three were boys that played baseball so we were always at the baseball field for Little League fireworks in Nacogdoches. Most of the community was there and all of our friends.

When I moved to Kentucky, we went to the fireworks in Cincinnati on the river. We sat high on the banks and literally laid on a blanket looking up watching the beautiful lights over the river with a power reflection from the water.

Freedom is a powerful thing. But more powerful is God.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Ephesians 6:10-17
